My current project...Subway Art and other randoms

So a couple of months ago while brainstorming for a idea for a present I came across a crafting trend..This http://tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com/2010/08/subway-art-party.html (Thanks Tatertots & Jello) Now I've been obsessed with trying the trend for myself. Only thing there is 101 ways to do these signs. The easiest is with a Die-cutting machine  ( which I'm trying to avoid buying so I don't  look totally insane lol)  such as Sillohette or a Cricut (both a little pricey). So far I've already spent a good deal of money on canvas. I should have brought wood but I went to Home Depot Saturday and stared at this giant planks of plywood and yes it was pretty cheap but I was like what am I supposed to do with all this? I am a Home Depot virgin btw. I've only been in the store once or twice and have never seen a handsaw up close or checked out at paint samples until yesterday(I'm a renter so if I paint its white or black lol). I must have spent hours in that store looking around like a lost child.  I also don't have a hand or mite saw lying around so I'd probably have to buy that also for the molding/sides. So I thought canvas was an easier but more expensive way out.
Luckly I did buy them on in a bundle I got 3 of the big ones at AC more for $14 and some 8x10s from Michale's for $6 (with a 25% off coupon). Mind you these are just for myself and practice. I still want to get a nice woodbacked canvas for the present but I have more then enough to play with the different styles. Once I figuare this out I'll post up a tutorial and I'll be sure to take pics of stages. But I'm eager to get started I have basically all the materials to do it (the slow hard way anyways lol). So I'm hoping it turns out decent so I don't have to splurge on one of those diecutters cause I will have to make paper crafting my other job to make up for that purchase lol.
